A quiet contemporary home shaped by Wabi-Sabi simplicity and the expressive character of Peranakan design. At Flamingo Valley, two seemingly contrasting design languages come together. The calm, understated nature of Wabi-Sabi forms the foundation of the home, while Peranakan-inspired colours, patterns and decorative details introduce moments of personality and heritage.
Rather than allowing either style to dominate, the design finds balance between the two.
A warm neutral palette runs throughout the home, complemented by natural wood tones, softly textured finishes and gentle lighting. Curves become a recurring architectural language—from arched openings and rounded walls to sculpted ceilings and recessed display niches—softening the spaces and creating a natural sense of flow from one area to another.
Against this restrained backdrop, the Peranakan influence is introduced selectively. Patterned tiles bring colour and rhythm into the kitchen, entrance and bathrooms, while decorative basins, distinctive mirrors and carefully chosen objects add richer layers of detail. These expressive elements are intentionally concentrated in key areas, allowing them to stand out without disrupting the overall calmness of the home.
Functionality is equally integrated into the architecture. Full-height cabinetry keeps storage visually unobtrusive, while a concealed door within the bedroom wardrobe leads discreetly into the ensuite bathroom. In the kitchen, a glass enclosure separates the cooking area while maintaining visual connection and openness.
Throughout the home, illuminated niches provide places for the homeowners’ collectibles, keepsakes and personal objects. Rather than styling the interior purely for appearance, these details allow the space to reflect the people living within it.
The result is not a literal interpretation of either Wabi-Sabi or traditional Peranakan interiors. Instead, it is a contemporary dialogue between restraint and expression—soft forms against intricate patterns, muted tones against moments of colour, and simplicity balanced by heritage and personality.
